Recommended Websites How Does A Car Engine Work? A car engine is one of the most important parts of an automobile. Without it, the car won't start and run. A car engine is usually located under the hood or in the front of your car where you can see a bunch of metal, tubes and wires. But ever wonder what 's going on in there? How can those nuts, bolts and wires make your car run? Everything started when a German engineer, Nikolaus Otto, invented the gasoline engine. Virtually every car engine made ever since has been inspired by his four-stroke design. Over the years, car engine sytem has evolved. The crank of the bicycle and the crank in the engine work in similar way. There is a turning force that has been developed which is called torque. Torque is the component which produces or tends to produce rotation. There is a number of pistons inside an engine depending on the design that fire consecutively to rotate a crankshaft inside the engine block, pulling a mixture of fuel and air into the cylinder. The purpose of a gasoline car engine is to convert gasoline into motion so that your car can move. When the gases from this mixture are ignited, they will expand. This forces the piston downward in the cylinder and burns the gasoline inside the engine, which is called "internal combustion." There are four cycles that make an engine run. They are intake, compression, power and exhaust. Exhaust is what is left of the gases after they are ignited and expel their energy. The exhaust gases travel out of the combustion chamber going to the tailpipe and out away from your car. Almost every item under the hood of your car helps to make one of these four cycles happen.
